Ushuaia councillor calls for fines for travel agencies that use British terms in relation to the Malvinas

Following the court ruling that ordered Cruiseline to stop promoting trips to the Malvinas Islands as British, Councillor Nicolas Pelolli is promoting, for a similar reason, a punitive action against the city's Travel and Tourism Agencies. He is asking for fines of up to $6 million and closures for 30 days.

Promotion of the Ushuaia Travel and Tourism Agency, Pingüinos Expediciones.

After having detected and documented that Travel and Tourism Agencies of the capital city of Tierra del Fuego , promote cruises to the Malvinas Islands, and other destinations in the South Atlantic and Antarctica; with the toponymy that the United Kingdom of Great Britain gives to the island and maritime territories usurped from the Argentine Republic; the councilman and journalist from Ushuaia, Nicolas Pelolli , presented a project that modifies Ordinance No. 5213 -which institutes the obligation to promote these circuits with the legitimate and only names recognized by the Nation-; requesting that a punitive system be established for all those who fail to comply with the established.

The company imposed progressive fines ranging from 1,200 UFA for the first violation to 7,000 UFA , and closure for 30 days in cases of repeat violations . Translated into current values, the 1,200 UFA is equivalent to 1 million pesos and the 7,000 is equivalent to about 6 million pesos .

The company is calling for sanctions to be imposed on the owners of commercial activities, with the violations being cumulative, regardless of the fantasy name under which they operate. In this way, the company is seeking to strengthen the current regulations to prevent companies from using the illegitimate name imposed by the British occupiers on maps, cartography or tourist promotions of any kind; it was reported in a press release.

“This failure is not only an affront to our sovereignty, but also an illegal and deceitful action. Defending our sovereignty in all areas is an unavoidable duty. We cannot allow commercial interests to override our history and the respect we owe to those who fought for the Malvinas cause ,” stated Nicolás Pelolli ; adding: “We cannot give up sovereignty for one more sale,” assuming the commitment to work “so that Ushuaia is an example in the defense of our history and our rights.”
