The Ushuaia Ex-Combatants will support the creation of an Investigative Commission regarding the British radar.

In response to the request of Legislator Pablo Villegas, the Malvinas Ex-Combatants Center unanimously decided to support the creation of an Investigative Commission.

For the ex-combatants, there is no room for Gustavo Melella to continue hindering access to the truth about how a British space and military surveillance instrument was installed on Fuegian soil.

In a move of enormous political and sovereign significance, the War Veterans of the city of Ushuaia unanimously decided to support the request to create an Investigative Commission in the Legislature. The decision seeks to dismantle the shield that the Gustavo Melella administration has maintained during 2023, 2024, and 2025 to protect and cover up those responsible for the installation of the LeoLabs antenna field in Tolhuin.

Without specifically intending to, Federico Sciurano , president of Commission 7 of the Tierra del Fuego legislature, managed to make the headquarters of the Malvinas War Veterans Center in Ushuaia (CEMU) the setting this Friday for a decisive shift in the case that undermines national security and defense and keeps the Tierra del Fuego community on edge. During the first session of the Malvinas, Antarctica, and South Atlantic Commission , the veterans not only set an agenda regarding education and the defense of natural resources, but also took a firm institutional stance: they spearheaded the demand for an investigation, naming names, into who authorized the installation of a radar system, funded by British and Irish capital, in the heart of Tierra del Fuego's main island.

The end of official protection

Although the Provincial Legislature—both formally and officially—has opted for silence following the meeting, the significance of what transpired will not only be undeniable, but will also open a new chapter, revealing the parliamentary will to pursue truth or secrecy. The request made by legislator Pablo Villegas (MPF) to establish an Investigative Commission found the necessary support among veterans, support that had been politically lacking in previous years.

This support came eight days after the existence of the radar was brought up at the main event on April 2nd in Ushuaia, commemorating the 44th anniversary of the Malvinas War . Veteran and director of Agenda Malvinas, Daniel Guzmán , loudly demanded that Secretary Andrés Dachary take responsibility for the fact that the government he is part of was responsible for the permits that allowed the installation of the LeoLabs antenna field in Tolhuin. The veterans' message was clear: there is no room for the Provincial Executive Branch, headed by Gustavo Melella , to continue obstructing access to the truth about how a foreign space and military surveillance instrument managed to establish itself on Tierra del Fuego soil.

A comprehensive defense agenda

While the LeoLabs case dominated the political tension, the meeting was mostly focused on the urgent need for a sovereign educational program . The veterans, led by Juan Carlos Parodi , demanded that the Provincial Government stop postponing the implementation of existing laws (Law 817/10 and Law 27,671). They also called on the National University of Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF) to reactivate the academic approach initiated in 2018.

"You can't defend what you don't know. We demand that training be implemented in classrooms immediately ," declared Juan Carlos Parodi , the former combatants, who also denounced the monumental fishing and oil plundering at the Sea Lion field, with an eye toward 2028. They succeeded in getting the legislators on Commission 7 to agree to initiate an in-depth study of both situations, in order to generate strategies and legislative instruments to stop the theft of natural resources and wealth in the South Atlantic.

Alert over the "Milei model"

The note of concern also pointed toward the Casa Rosada (the Argentine presidential palace). It analyzed President Javier Milei 's statements to the British newspaper The Telegraph on December 29th —where he subordinated sovereignty to the will of the colonists—breaking with almost two centuries of Argentine diplomatic tradition initiated by Manuel Moreno in 1833.

With this decision, the Malvinas Islands Ex-Combatants Center of Ushuaia moves away from the position of spectator and becomes an actor that, from outside of politics, comes to push the legislature and the State agencies to mobilize in defense of the stolen sovereignty and against the leak and danger in terms of defense, which the existence of the LeoLabs radar in the center of the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego represents.
