Among other officials and leaders who came out to criticize the inaction of the current administration regarding the claim of sovereignty over the South Atlantic, the Mercosur parliamentarian, Gabriel Fuks , asked Foreign Minister Diana Mondino for an urgent explanation about this omission.
It is worth noting that President Milei also did not attend the meeting with the rest of the regional leaders , and this decision has been pointed out as a historic disrespect towards the international organization.
In the midst of the controversy, it is questioned whether there was an explicit order to avoid the claim by the Argentine authorities in the international forum. This is an unprecedented omission in almost three decades .
"The Argentine Foreign Ministry must urgently give an explanation as to why the historic claim of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands was not included in the declaration of the Mercosur member states, as occurred in all previous declarations," said Fuks .
The Mercosur meeting, held in the city of Asunción, Paraguay, last Monday, July 8, had as its fundamental characteristic the lack of mention of the territorial conflict with respect to the Malvinas Islands . This situation was highlighted by Fuks , who argued for consistency and persistence in international claims , and raised the possibility that there had been a deliberate instruction to omit this issue from the declaration.
Fuks highlighted the contrast between the prioritization of other aspects in the summit's final document , which included diverse topics such as the incorporation of Bolivia as a full member and the fight against transnational crime , while the claim on the Malvinas Islands was excluded.
In this framework, the parliamentarian highlighted that "it is part of a historical disrespect by Milei to the most important regional organization for our country" and recalled precedents of other Argentine leaders in regional summits: "Only Fernando De La Rúa in the midst of the political and social crisis was missing to a summit of heads of state.”
The parliamentarian stressed that "claims must be sustained over time and in a systematic manner" so that the issue continues to be valid in diplomatic debates in the region.
