It is for the existing Primary School at the NATO military base in Mount Pleasant, where officers are allocated housing for their families, and therefore school-aged children.
The military complex that guards the airport is located about 45 kilometers from Puerto Argentino, and in principle the contract could be for five years, with free accommodation including some other comforts at home.
The UK Ministry of Defence promotes it by stating that “if you are an inspired teacher, with a passion for progress and fulfilment, personal resilience and a sense of adventure, then this is the opportunity for you.”
The school is staffed by one teacher, a principal, and an administrative assistant. Students range in age from 3 to 11, all from the Mount Pleasant Complex and live in the vicinity of the school. The number of students is around 26, and much depends on the rotation of military families. Since 2019, the school has had a new multi-purpose building, performance hall, recreational facilities, and classrooms.
After the first year of the contract, the teacher is eligible for a return trip to the UK and a flight to Chile for a few days' 'refreshment break'. Applications for aspiring candidates close on 17 September.
