The symbolism of defeat: Milei compares himself to an English Crusader against Argentine orcs

He posted an image of himself on Instagram, embodying the figure of a medieval knight, his cape bearing the Cross of St. George, standing in front of orcs with the Argentine flag. A woman is standing in the background.

“No one gives up here, the battle has just begun,” he said on Instagram.

In the middle of his speech last night, acknowledging defeat in the Buenos Aires province elections, President Javier Milei quoted Winston Churchill : "Failure is not fatal, what counts is the courage to continue." The phrase, uttered after a crushing 13-point lead over Axel Kicillof , failed to hide the electoral setback suffered by the Libertarians in the country's main stronghold. Peronism, under the Fuerza Patria front, consolidated an unchallengeable victory, highlighting the weak support of the La Libertad Avanza administration in the Buenos Aires province .

Despite the message of resilience, the presidential rhetoric took a bellicose turn. At 2 AM this Monday, hours before the count ended, Milei posted a highly symbolic image on Instagram: his back to the crowd, Embodying the figure of a medieval Crusader knight, wearing a cape with the English cross in the center, he faces the Argentine people, whom he (the president) represents as orcs carrying the national flag. The accompanying message is categorical: "No one surrenders here; the battle has just begun . "

The image, which quickly went viral, encapsulates a profound and dangerous contradiction. Milei adopts the figure of an English crusader—a symbol of the same nation with which Argentina has a historic dispute over sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands—to confront an army of orcs representing the Argentine people. This attitude creates a greater distance between the symbolic representation of the presidential figure and national sensibilities; and raises serious questions about what will happen in the country, based on the decisions made by the Libertarian Regime during these 40 days of campaigning, until next October 26.
